The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice (UVMP) is situated in the second largest city in Slovakia, located in the eastern part of the country. Košice, a city with three universities, is rich in its history, monuments, culture, education, developed industry and beautiful surroundings.

UVMP was established in 1949 and this year marks its 70th anniversary. It is a sole university for veterinary education in Slovakia, which is provided both to domestic and foreign students, and one of the two universities offering education in pharmacy. The university has approximately 2000 students, of whom about 250 are from abroad and study veterinary medicine in the English language. These are mostly from Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Great Britain, Greece and other countries.

UVMP is a one faculty university providing education in bachelor study programmes Cynology, Safety of Food and Feed, Animal Science, and Man-Animal Relationship and its Use in Canistherapy and Hippotherapy, DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) degree study programmes, which include General Veterinary Medicine and Food Hygiene, and master study programmes in Pharmacy and Market and Food Quality. The university provides also education in 14 postgraduate study programmes (PhD).

The university as a public higher education institution fulfils its mission within the system of higher education institutions in compliance with the Higher Education Act, particularly by providing the highest level of professional education in the field of veterinary medicine, food hygiene and environmental protection and by producing graduates in the regulated profession who hold the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, in accordance with the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September, 2005, and the Directive 2013/55/EU.

UVMP has received international accreditation based on evaluation by EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education). The evaluation process was successfully completed in 2016 after the visiting experts had recommended that our university be ranked among the approved and accredited schools. UVMP joined 14 other European veterinary schools (out of 96) with the status of an accredited school granted by EAEVE.
